The 28th Street Obelisk & Pump Station Restoration project aims restore the decommissioned 28th street pump station- base building and obelisk- to it's original 1928 condition. The scope of work includes selective demolition, concrete and stucco repairs, interior tile work, plumbing at fountains, enhanced lighting and substantial site work to include new paving and drainage improvements.

The 28th Street Obelisk & Pump Station Restoration Project is being referred to the Commission because the Type of Construction, Alteration Level 2 (per Chapter 5- FBCE 501.1), triggers a requirement for vertical accessibility. Making such accommodations would be incongruent with the historic character of the structure.

Comments:
The scope of work needed to restore the 28th Street Obelisk and Pump Station to the 1296 design and configuration, has triggered compliance with the 2017 Florida Building Code – Existing Building – Accessibility.
Access to the Obelisk will be provided by two new accessible walkways connecting existing sidewalks to a new plaza surrounding the Obelisk. Currently there is no plaza and no access to the Obelisk.
The existing Pump Room, which finish floor elevation is 3'-11'' below grade is not open and will not be open to the public.
The open terrace is 7'-10" above the plaza and the "Building" Division of the City of Miami Beach Building Department has requested vertical accessibility.
