An elevator cannot be located outside of the building as it is part of an industrial complex that does not allow any exterior additions to existing buildings.Vertical accessibility is structurally infeasible inside the building due to existing heavily reinforced 2nd floor framing and existing metal roof diaphragm bracing. Elevator construction would cause the manufacturing process to close during construction due to vibration sensitive laser equipment and construction dust.

Description:

Ultrafast Systems is a highly specialized industrial company concentrating on the design and manufacture of time-resolved laser spectrometers that they provide on a worldwide basis. Their process utilizes laser tables that are highly sensitive to vibration and construction dust, and elevator construction would require the existing manufacturing process to be closed, causing undue financial hardship for the owner and his employees. There are no employee offices or labs on the second floor that are not provided for on the first floor, and all employees have full access to the first accessible floor. Any handicapped employee will be fully accommodated. The business is not open to the public and receives very few outside vendors who do not require access to the second floor.

Substantial financial costs will be incurred by the owner if the waiver is denied. The owner has made a diligent investigation into the costs of compliance with the code, but cannot find an efficient mode of compliance. Provide detailed cost estimates and, where appropriate, photographs. Cost estimates must include bids and quotes.
