RE: Updating Training Courses With the 2006 Code Supplement
DATE: September 18, 2006
You received an emailed Memorandum, dated July 21, 2006, stating that any course materials either developed or purchased must reflect the current building code. You were also informed that the Florida Building Commission will adopt the 2006 Building Code Supplement at the August Commission meeting. Also, it was stated that the same 2006 Supplement will be available on the Building Code Information System (BCIS) on or around September 15, 2006.
The 2006 Supplement is now available, as of September 18, 2006, on the BCIS. Please follow the steps below to find the Supplement.
Providers will have sixty (60) calendar days from the date of code adoption to update existing accredited courses that are affected by the code changes and submit for reaccredidation. Existing courses may continue to be delivered during the 60 calendar day period. The code version that initiated the update and reaccredidation process must be noted on the application. With this language, you need to have your courses updated by November 18, 2006.
Please note that when you go into the BCIS to update your course(s), use your original course number when calling your course up and then updating it. If this is not done, then there may end up being many duplicate courses in the system. To revise your course, use the revise button in the system. After your revision is complete, it will show in the system as R – 1 to indicate that it has been revised once. At this point you will then submit your course for re-accreditation.

For your information---the email notification part of the accreditation process (on the BCIS) has been acting erratically over the last month. Be reassured that this issue is being addressed and will be fixed as soon as possible.
Also, as a reminder, you received notice that as of September 1, 2006, the Department of Community Affairs will no longer develop new course materials, except for those courses authorized under 9B-70.002(3), which gives the Commission the authority to develop courses under special circumstances. Otherwise, this means that from September 1, 2006, each training provider will be responsible for developing whatever new course materials they want to use to train their respective customer base.
Courses that were previously purchased (and will still be able to be purchased in the future) from the Department of Community Affairs can be used as long as they meet whatever current standards or criteria that are described in statute, and of course, reflect the current building code (2006 Supplement).
