Meeting Activities:

  1. Mr. Brad Schiffer reported on his research and reviewed the matrix chart that identified conflicts which exist between the two codes IBC-2006 and NFPA 1012006.

  2. The committee discussed on an approach / methodology if there is one method that can be acceptable between the two codes and which one should take precedence or change one code to the more restrictive.

  3. The committee expressed that a new chapter 43, Rehabilitation, was added to NFPA 101. This chapter is similar to the Florida Building Code, Existing Building Volume. The committee tasked Jim Goodloe, Mo Madani, Hamid Bahadori and Michelle Humphries to review the requirements for rehabilitation in both the Existing Building Volume of the FBC and NFPA Chapter 43 Rehabilitation, and advise whether the new chapter 43 needs to be eliminated and refer instead to the Florida Building Code, Existing Building.

  4. Jeff Gross raised an issue with regard to platform lifts which may reduce requirements for stairs. Hamid stated that s.1009.1 of the FBC already addressed Jeff’s concern which mainly indicated that reduction of width of stairs is not allowed in commercial buildings.

  5. Staff presented the committee with a list of standards which are not consistent with regard to their edition between the proposed 2007 FBC and the 2007 FFPC. The committee staff of both the Fire Marshal. and DCA to work together to make sure that editions of standards in both codes are consistent.

  6. Brad Schiffer volunteered to draft code changes for discussion at the March Commission/TAC meeting to both the proposed 2007 FBC and the 2007 FFPC to address conflicts which may exist between the two codes in the subjects of common path of travel, dead end corridor, travel distance and remoteness of exits

for discussion. Brad stated that the code changes will be available for review by late February and advised that careful review by committee members is needed to ensure accuracy.
