Gentlemen,

To introduce myself, I am the Vice President and C.E.O. of Signature Door Inc. Signature Door Inc. is an exterior door manufacture located in Altoona, PA.

Over the years Signature Door has invested over $500,000.00 on testing and product approvals to meet and exceed the codes required in the Florida market. It has come to our attention that along with fraud,  (including the use of false labels), to pass off a brand X door as a Signature Door and ( using our product approvals ), many are using the loophole of a one time or custom door as a reason to bypass testing and use the test results of another company. I do not feel it is fair to those of use who play by the rules. We  pay for the testing and approvals including   having  our manufacturing plant held to quality standards and inspections,  just to have someone import a door built without any quality control and have some unethical  P.E. sign off using our test results. I have attached a copy of one for you to look at. I might add, this is not a one of a kind door.  I hope this drives home the need to make some changes. This is clearly putting the consumer in harms way.

While state and Dade approvals may be public record, no manufacturer believes it acceptable practice for another, without consent of the product approval holder, to use those bought and paid for approval(s) as justification for product(s) other than those in the approval.  Even though these approvals may be public record, there are still rights of ownership that should be in force.

In addition to being totally unfair and unethical to use product approvals in the manner I have described, those doing this inadvertently put the manufacturer and engineer listed on the approval liable for jobs they have no part in.

I have to believe that this miss use of the process is not the intent of the state department, product approval committee, nor the product approval process in general.  I also have to believe that you all agree that this is abuse of the product approval system.
